Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Context for Owner Penalties
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the fine manageable for the wealthy owner.
